Area rugs, or accent rugs, are a great way to add interest and style to any room. In addition to providing warmth and protecting your hard-surface flooring, area rugs can define sitting areas, provide a focal point in a large room, and help unify a mixture of furniture styles.
They come in a wide range of styles, sizes, and prices.
Common Styles of Accent Rugs
Oriental
Hand-knotted Oriental rugs are usually named after their place of origin. They feature rich colors and patterns and are very durable. Many machine-made rugs, featuring Oriental rug designs, are also referred to as Oriental rugs.
Dhurrie
Dhurrie rugs are flat-weave rugs that are traditionally handwoven in India. They are usually wool or cotton and come in various colors and designs.
Braided
Braided rugs are made from strips of cloth braided and stitched together. They have a more casual, rustic look.
Hooked
Hooked rugs are made with yarn or fabric pulled through a backing.
Needlepoint
Needlepoint rugs are stitched on a canvas with woolen yarns. They often come in floral patterns.

Cushion or Padding for Area Rugs
Make sure you place a non-skid cushion or padding under all area rugs to keep them from sliding. This will help increase the life of your area rug as well as keep people from slipping on the rugs.
How to Properly Place an Accent Rug
First, it’s important to choose the right size for your space. The right size rug with proper placement can serve as an anchor in your room, providing a cohesiveness for your furnishings. Here are some placement tips:
• If you’re placing a rug under living room furniture to define a sitting area, be sure about a foot of rug is showing on either side of your sofa or chairs.
• Keep at least two legs of furniture on the rug – four for a more formal look.
• For dining room rugs, be sure all dining room chairs are within the rug’s perimeter with enough room for the chairs to easily be pulled out and remain on the rug.
• In a hallway, choose a length that will fill the space but be sure there’s equal space on both ends for proper balance.
How to Care for Area Rugs
Just like any other type of flooring, area rugs need proper care and cleaning to keep them looking like new. After vacuuming both sides, take the accent rug outdoors and use soap and warm water to clean it, rinse and let dry.
